I’m a San Marcos cover-up tattoo expert because I chose the hard stuff on purpose.
Cover-ups make me think. They make me solve problems. That artistic challenge is what keeps me alive.
And design? That’s me. I design tattoos. I designed this website. Design is in the air I breathe and the blood that runs through me.
I believe almost any tattoo can be covered with the right contrast, movement, and a design that flows with your body so naturally, it looks like you were born with it.

Then I turn it into something that doesn’t look covered up.

THE DESIGN PROCESS
Built to Fit You
When you bring me an idea and a placement, I start with your body.
I study your anatomy, the direction of your muscles, and the natural S-curves that run through you. Then I use 3D models in Procreate to build the composition around those lines so the tattoo moves with your body instead of just sitting on top of it.

Then I start pushing the idea.
I think about how to give it flair, personality, movement, and drama. I use modern technology to explore possibilities, then take those ideas apart, combine styles, rebuild compositions, and shape everything around what you actually want.
Sometimes you come to me with a finished vision. Sometimes you come with a rough idea.
Either way, I want to take it further.

Saint's Story
SIBERIA TO STALINGRAD
Born January second, nineteen ninety, in the brutal cold of Tyumen, Siberia. My mother was a nurse assisting a heart surgeon, so discipline and pressure were part of my world early.
But Volgograd raised me.
Stalingrad.
A city destroyed by war and built again from the bones up.
The monuments weren’t decoration. They stood over the city like gods carved from stone.
At Mamayev Kurgan, sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich didn’t create soft figures. He built bodies like weapons—sharp faces, deep eyes, heavy hands, massive shoulders, powerful anatomy, muscles loaded with tension. Figures that looked like they were still moving through battle.
Pain. Violence. Sacrifice. Victory.
All carried in the same body.
That was the art I grew up under.
Hard contrast. Dramatic flow. Powerful anatomy. Dynamic movement. Images made to dominate space and stay in your head.
When Putin came to power, sports and physical training were pushed hard. Public sports programs made boxing, kickboxing, and other training accessible to kids like me, often for free.
So I trained.
And it was brutal.
Volgograd’s brutality didn’t end when you walked out of the gym. It was in the streets. You learned to stand your ground. Control fear. Take a hit. Keep your eyes open. Fight when you had to.
Sometimes fighting wasn’t sport.
It was survival.
And through all of it, I was drawing—faces, bodies, muscles, shadows.
I didn’t know it then, but Volgograd was already building the visual language I would later bring into tattooing:
Powerful anatomy. Brutal contrast. Dramatic movement. Pressure. Force.
The city was brutal.
The art was brutal.
It made me brutal.
Tattooing taught me how to control it.
ROLANDO MONTANA & CKC
Eventually, I came to the United States.
I worked as an administrator in a care home for elderly residents. It was stable work, but when I wasn’t working, my life still revolved around the same things it always had:
painting, drawing, and fighting.
Muay Thai was already a major part of my life. I had experience, I could fight, and I took the sport seriously.
That eventually led me to Rolando Montano and Carlsbad Kickboxing Club — CKC.
Rolando wasn’t just some guy running classes out of a fight gym.
He is a U.S. Army veteran, former amateur cruiserweight and heavyweight Muay Thai/kickboxing champion, and Team USA Muay Thai coach. He founded Carlsbad Kickboxing Club and built it from a small group of fighters into one of North County San Diego’s most established Muay Thai programs. Within its first seven years, CKC had grown to more than 1,000 members.
More importantly to me, Rolando built a place that produces fighters.
CKC became known for its competition program, especially its youth program, sending athletes to compete nationally and internationally and putting fighters on Team USA. Under Rolando’s leadership, CKC fighters have accumulated more than 60 national and world championship titles.
He built champions.
And eventually, he helped build me into one too.
I originally walked into CKC because I wanted to train.
What I found was much bigger than a gym.
Rolando became my coach, then one of my closest friends. The fighters and people around CKC became my family in America. I spent countless hours there — training, sparring, preparing, getting exhausted, getting better, and doing it again the next day.
There is something about fighting that strips away bullshit.
When you are exhausted and somebody is still standing in front of you, you find out very quickly what kind of person you are.
CKC taught me to stay composed under pressure, to keep thinking when I was tired, and to keep working when my body wanted me to stop.
Those lessons followed me out of the ring and eventually into tattooing.
The club became such an important part of my life that I have CKC tattooed on my body.
CKC for life.
Eventually, all that work led me to compete at a championship level.
People sometimes associate that chapter of my life with Thailand because that is where I eventually won.
But I have always looked at it differently.
Thailand was where they handed me the belt.
The years of work that made me capable of earning it happened before I ever got there.
They happened with Rolando.
They happened with my teammates.
They happened inside Carlsbad Kickboxing Club.
CKC made me a champion.
Thailand just gave me the belt.
ART IS THE MEANING
After America, I went back to Russia. I had built some passive income through marketing work, and after my marriage ended, I finally decided to do something I had wanted to do for years:
Go to Thailand. Train Muay Thai. Fight.
I went alone and lived as cheaply as possible. I found the cheapest room, ate simple food, and built my entire day around training. I would wake up around 6:00 AM, run to the gym before everyone else, and train throughout the day until around 8:00 at night. Train, cold shower, eat some bananas, go back and do it again. The trainers saw how serious I was and started giving me more personalized attention.
Within about a week, I started fighting. Eventually, I became a champion. It was something I had dreamed about for years, and that weekend I celebrated hard.
Then I got stopped by the police.
They took my passport and locked me up for 28 days.
Inside, I had almost nothing to do, so I started drawing on the walls with coffee. When the guards told me to stop, I told them to give me paper and pencils instead. They did. From then on, my days became drawing, training, and meditation.
With everything else stripped away, I started asking myself a question:
If money wasn’t a thing, what would I actually want to do with my life?
The answer was right in front of me.
Even locked up with almost nothing, I was still finding a way to create.
Art.
Eventually, I was deported back to the United States. From there I went to Spain, had a wild romance, and eventually returned to Russia.
Thailand started as a dream about fighting.
It ended up showing me what I actually wanted to spend my life doing.
That’s when the path toward tattooing really began.
SERGO MAYA - MY MENTOR
After Thailand, the United States, and Spain, I eventually came back to Russia. By then I knew I wanted my life to revolve around art. I just didn’t know exactly what form that was going to take.
That changed when I met Sergey Alexandrov — better known as Sergo Maya — in Volzhsky, outside Volgograd. Sergo was a tattoo artist, musician, and entrepreneur who had built MAYA TEAM around his creative interests. Tattoo Maya became more than just a tattoo shop: the business included tattooing and tattoo education, a barbershop, and eventually MAYA Records, his recording studio. As Sergo Maya, he also released his own hip-hop and rap music, with tracks appearing on major streaming platforms.
What I liked about Sergo was that he was a creator in more than one direction. His public philosophy was basically to keep moving through mistakes, learn from failure, and spend your energy doing something you actually enjoy. He had built his own world around art instead of limiting himself to one thing.
The day after I met him, I came back to become his apprentice.
There wasn’t some six-month period of watching from the corner. By my third day, I was already tattooing people. I learned fast because I became completely consumed by it. I drew, watched, tattooed, made mistakes, corrected them, and went right back to work. Within about a month, I was already becoming genuinely good at tattooing.
Sergo gave me the opportunity and the environment to learn by actually doing the work. Tattoo Maya was also actively teaching tattooing—the studio operated an Art Tattoo school where students trained directly in the craft rather than treating tattooing as something you could learn only from theory.
And my life changed very quickly after that.
Six months after becoming Sergo’s apprentice, I came to the United States for the first time as a tattoo artist.
The last time I had been in America, I was an administrator, a fighter, and an artist still trying to figure out where all of those pieces belonged.
This time I arrived with a tattoo machine.
I had found the work.
BIG BOSS GORDO
About six months after I started tattooing, I came to the United States for the first time as a tattoo artist. A friend of my brother named Chris introduced me to Gordo Smeed — Big Boss Gordo.
By then, Gordo had already been tattooing since 1989. Over the years he built and founded shops including Good Neighbor Tattoo, True Style Tattoo, and eventually Locally Famous Tattoo. What always stood out to me wasn’t just that he could tattoo — it was that he understood how to build a business, build a team, and keep good people around him. His artists respected him, his clients respected him, and he knew how to create a shop that people wanted to be part of.
When I first came out, I technically had a place to stay in Encinitas, but driving back and forth to Escondido every day was too much. Eventually, Gordo basically took me in. He let me sleep on the couch at the tattoo shop and gave me a place to work when I was still trying to establish myself in America.
That turned into a routine for years. Every winter I would come back to California for a few months, tattoo as much as I could, make a bunch of money, and then go back to Russia where I could live extremely well on what I had earned.
Through all of that, I always looked up to Gordo. He was the kind of businessman I wanted to understand better — solid crew, loyal people, good reputation, no unnecessary bullshit. He knew how to make a tattoo shop feel like a team instead of just a room full of artists renting space.
Years later, after Russia, Thailand, Mexico, and everything else that happened in my life, I ended up back beside him at Locally Famous Tattoo in San Marcos.
There is a lot of history behind that for me.
Gordo gave me a couch when I needed somewhere to sleep and a station when I needed somewhere to work.
Now, more than three decades into his own tattoo career, I get to work beside him again — not as the new Russian tattoo artist sleeping in the shop, but as part of the team he built.
THIS WEBSITE
Tattooing isn’t the only art I’m obsessed with. I fucking love marketing.
To me, marketing is almost the pinnacle of artistry because it forces every creative discipline to work together. Writing, photography, graphic design, web design, video, psychology, human behavior, sales, style, technology, and numbers all have to point in the same direction.
And marketing is a bitch.
It’s like a gorgeous woman who is incredibly picky, constantly changing her mind, and never completely tells you what she wants. Something works beautifully, then people change. Google changes. Technology changes. Design changes. Attention changes. What converted yesterday can suddenly stop converting tomorrow.
That difficulty is exactly why I love it.
This is the fourth website I’ve built for myself. I was making my own websites long before I really understood what I was doing. I could make things look good, but making something beautiful and making something actually work are two completely different skills.
The person who really taught me how to think about that was Brandon McPeak, founder of Odyssey Lab. Brandon has worked in digital marketing since 2008, with a background spanning SEO, web development, branding, copy, analytics, advertising, and B2B SaaS. He built his career around understanding how all of those pieces work together to turn attention into action.
Learning from Brandon changed the way I looked at websites. A website isn’t a digital business card. Every headline, photograph, button, animation, review, color, piece of copy, loading speed, and position on the page is doing a job. If it looks incredible but nobody books, it failed.
That’s what Saintstatts.com is to me. It’s not something I hired somebody to design around my work. I built it myself — the writing, structure, visuals, marketing, psychology, and constant testing behind it.
Tattooing gives me a difficult piece of skin and asks me to solve it. Marketing gives me a human being whose attention I have for a few seconds and asks me to figure out what makes them stop, trust me, and book.
I love both for the same reason.
They’re difficult.
They force me to think.
And there is always another problem to solve.
Marketing is the work.
Tattooing is the reward.
